Congratulations on your purchase of the Roland RD-170 Digital Piano. This TurboStart contains step-by-step instructions that will quickly introduce you to the RD-170�s major features.

Splitting the Keyboard
The RD-170 play two sounds in different sections of the keyboard. This is called a �split.� Use the following procedure to create a split: 1. 2. 3. Press SPLIT so it�s lit�the UPPER and LOWER buttons will also light. Press and hold the LOWER button and press the desired TONE SELECT button to choose a sound for the lower part of the keyboard. Press and hold the UPPER button and press the desired TONE select button to choose a sound for the upper part of the keyboard. Use the PART LEVEL sliders to adjust the levels for the two parts. To exit Split mode, press SPLIT so it�s not lit.
Playing the Demo Songs
Use the following procedure to play the built-in demo songs: 1. Hold down the SYSTEM button and press EDIT. 2. Press the TONE SELECT button that corresponds to the demo you wish to hear�there are 16 demo songs. 3. Press PLAY to stop playback, or press another TONE SELECT button to hear another demo. 4. Press EXIT to exit Demo mode.

Selecting Sounds
The RD-170 comes with 64-high-quality sounds that can be selected using the TONE SELECT and VARIATION buttons. Use the following procedure to select sounds: 1. Press the desired TONE SELECT button: Grand 2. 3. Piano, Rhodes, etc. Use the VARIATION button to select a variation. Press VARIATION again to select the next variation.
Note: If you wish to change the split point, hold down SPLIT and press the key at which you want the split to occur.
Using the Sequencer
The RD-170 comes with a two-track sequencer for recording musical ideas. Use the following procedure to record your music. 1. 2. 3. 4. Select the desired tone for recording (see �Selecting Sounds�). Press the REC button�the TRACK 1 and PLAY buttons begin flashing. Press the METRONOME button if you would like to play along with a metronome, and use the DEC/INC buttons to adjust its tempo. Press PLAY to start recording Track 1, or just begin playing and the RD-170 will automatically start recording. Press PLAY to stop recording Track 1. Press PLAY to listen to your recording. Press PLAY again to stop playback. Press REC�the TRACK 2 and PLAY buttons begin flashing. Select the desired tone for Track 2. Press PLAY to start recording Track 2 while listening to Track 1. Press PLAY to stop recording. Press PLAY again to listen to both tracks. Press PLAY to stop playback.
Note: You can also hold down the TONE SELECT button and press DEC/NO / INC/YES to select a variation tone.
Layering Tones
The RD-170 can play two sounds together. This is called a �layer.� Use the following procedure to create a layer: 1. Press the LOWER button so it's lit�both the UPPER and LOWER buttons will light. The RD-170 is now in Layer mode. 2. Press and hold the UPPER or LOWER button, and then press the desired TONE SELECT button to select a tone for that part. 3. Use the PART LEVEL sliders to adjust the volume of the upper and lower parts. 4. Press the UPPER or LOWER button to exit Layer mode.

Note: To preserve your recording when you turn off the RD-170, you must save your song in the RD-170�s Song Memory�see Page 21 of the RD-170 Owner�s Manual.
